Dietary Fiber & Children
Health Recently studies have been done exploring the importance of fiber for children and recommendations are now in place. American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that children between the ages of 2 & 19 consume their age plus 5 grams of fiber a day; thus a 9 year-old child should consume 14 grams of fiber daily. They state that a safe range of dietary fiber intake is between a child's age plus 5 g & a child's age plus 10 g fiber, per day. They further that " This range of dietary fiber intake is thought to be safe even if intake of some vitamins & minerals is marginal, should provide enough fiber for normal laxation, & may help prevent future chronic disease."(1) Pediatrics,(1) says,...consumption of dietary fiber in childhood is associated with
important health benefits, especially with respect to promoting normal laxation. Dietary fiber also may help reduce the future risk of
cardiovascular disease, some cancers, & adult-onset diabetes. Citations: (1) Williams, Christine L., Marguerite Bolella, and Ernst L. Wynder. "A new reccommendation for dietary fiber in childhood."
